Healing Hearts Ferret Rescue

Sponsor-A-FerretKid

Through out this blog you will see photographs or various ferrets.  These ferrets are the permanent kids.  What does that mean?  It means either due to age, medical issues, or emotional issues these specific ferrets will live out their lives here at the rescue. This ensures that they will receive whatever they need medically or emotionally. Some ferrets need medication everyday. Some ferrets need the Deslorine implant updated. Some ferrets stress so bad when they are surrendered that it would put their life at risk to adopt them out. Some ferrets have been here for so long that they now consider this their home and it wouldn't be fair to them to adopt them out.

By sponsoring a ferret you can help with their continued everyday care and medical expenses. It can be whatever amount you choose.  It can be monthly, bimonthly, yearly, or lifetime.  However you would like to set it up, in any amount you would like to donate, as often as you want.  One ferret can have more than one sponsor.  If you want to donate straight to the vet, it can be arranged, if you would rather send a food donation instead of a monetary donation that would be awesome!  Just pick a ferret and e-mail me at ferretfreakx4@yahoo.com We will make further arrangement's from there.

Emily Rainey- Adrenal and blind
Medical treatment- deslorelin implant

Emily's story is a sad one.  Her mama Susan Rainey had passed away. Special needs Emily and her sister Azalea were quickly given away before Susan's friends could help the girls.  With the support of many and the smart wits of one amazing woman these girls were tracked down within a week and I was only a phone call and two hours away in a moments notice.  When I got to these girls it was obvious they were not getting their meds and they were very depressed over the loss of their mama and upheaval of their home.  We lost Azalea about 4 months after we rescued them.  She had insulinoma, Adrenal disease, and major dental issues.  All her needs were addressed.  She was put back on Pred, received the deslorelin implant and had her much needed dental surgery.  I feel she never did fully recover the loss of her mama and home.
Her sister Emily (pictured below) also has the dreaded adrenal disease and is also fully blind. She was also scared, sad, and mad. She showed this by being aggressive.  I was warned she had attitude and she expertly sunk her teeth into my fingers every chance she got.  She wanted nothing to do with me.  It took months for her to calm down and learn to trust me.  Over a year and half later we have come to understand and love each other.  I have learned that she has to be woken up a certain way and handled a certain way and because I learned this a scared/sad/mad Emily is now a happy, loving, kissy Emily.  Only myself and one other male volunteer/friend can fully trust Emily as she will bestow her insecurities in the form of biting on people she doesnt know.

Beetlegeuse and Sazah
Medical treatments- Lupron shots for Beetle.

Beetlegeuse and Sazah both arrived and the rescue in the same week a few years ago.  Beetle was a stray found running around a factory parking lot.  Some kind people took him home with the intent of keeping him.  They realized within a month that they were not cut out to be ferret owners. They found someone who knew of a ferret rescue and that is when I met this snow white, kissy,  fat, bouncy, chatter box  ferret.  Sazah came in around the same time.  A young man had moved back in with his parents and the his mom hated Sazah.  So Sazah was banished to the hot garage in a small cage.  The young man knew this was no good for his ferret.  So he found a rescue.  When I picked Sazah up I though I was getting a little girl.  NOPE!  Him has boy parts :)  I educated the former owner and on we went home.  After a few weeks I decided to pair the 2 new boys up.  They quickly bonded and became fast friends.  Two beautiful snow white boys that for some odd reason no one ever adopted. But that is okay cause they are loved and happy here!

Beetle has developed adrenal disease.  He was first treated with lupron shots, and surgery. The night after surgery he had to be rushed to emergency.  He couldn't pee and clearly he was in major pain. He had a very bad urinary tract infection that almost killed him.  The great ER vet stabilized him and drained his bladder were we than transferred him to his regular vet.  Beetle spent 3 days at the vet hospital getting round the clock care.  He was doing better and got to come home.  We ended up back at the vet that night.  He spent more days at the vet hospital.  After a few weeks of antibiotics he was better and his fur was growing back after losing most of it due to adrenal disease.  He was happy again.   A few months after that he started losing his fur again :(  This time we opted for the deslorelin implant.  His fur stopped falling out but after six months we never saw any real improvement and Beetle kept getting urinary tract infections.   So we put him back on Lupron shots.  He has been on those for a year now and will have to remain on them for the rest of his life.  He hasnt had a single urinary tract infection since.   Do to those many urinary tract infections he now leaks and can't control his bladder fully.  So this once snowy white ferret is now stained yellow and no matter how many baths and cleanings he get he will always look the way he looks.
Sazah is healthy but due to the strong bond with Beetle we will not separate them.  I fear when Beetle passes away Sazah will go into major depression.  Those boys love each other so much!   Sazah only loves his Beetle and hates all other ferrets and will scream if any other ferret comes near him.  Due to Beetle's urine leakage Sazah is also stained yellow but both boys are beautiful in my eyes!!!

Gigit- Adrenal
Medical treatment- deslorelin implant

Gidgit is around 8 years old.  She entered the shelter system in 2009.  Her former owner could no longer keep her.  When Healing Hearts Ferret Rescue became "official" January 1, 2011 Gidgit was one of the many ferrets that became a Healing Hearts shelter kid when a friend of mine and I decided to become one rescue together.
In Feb 2012 I had to go rescue my shelter kids from my ex friends home. Upon arriving at the home it was clear that the ferrets were being neglected and my ex friend was no longer living in the home or properly taking care of the ferrets.
That day I came home with 13 ferrets. 8 of those ferrets were shelter kids 5 of those ferrets were her personals.  There should have been more. There were 26 missing shelter ferrets. Only 7 have been located at this time. The ex friend refuses to give any information on there whereabouts. I still don't know were 19 of them are at this time.  I think of those 19 everyday.  I hope they are happy, healthy, and loved.
Gidgit was among the 8 shelter kids.  She was not doing well at all.  The cage she was in was filthy.  She had no water.  My ex-friend brought her out of the ferret room wrapped in a  yellow blanket and said Gidgits heath was failing.  I took Gidgit in my arms and loved on her.  She was a bag of bones with long nails.  I set up a carrier with clean blankets, food, and water and placed her in it hoping she would be okay.
Today Gidgit is doing very well for her age and adrenal disease. Her adrenal disease is treated with the Deslorelin implant and she is doing very well on it.  She prefers to have a cage to herself and hates any intruders but does like to play with other ferrets outside of 'her space'  She loves anything that jingles or rattles and wants to kill anything that squeaks.  She loves peanut butter ferret treats and her soupies. She is plump and happy.

Klepto (emotional) Moo (adrenal)
Medical treatment- deslorelin implant for Moo

Klepto is a sweet 5 year old little manferret who has emotional issues.  Him and his cage mates came to the rescue in April of this year due to their humans having health problems. Klepto got very sad and quit eating.  Shelter mom had to go out of town one weekend and Klepto and Moo went to a ferret sitter because Klepto had to be force fed.  During that weekend things got better.  Shelter moms friend spoiled both Klepto and Moo with treats and Klepto finally started to eat on his own. The only problem now is Klepto is a treat begger.  He LOVES peanut butter Bandits.  He will eat other treats but is reluctant at first and only gives in when he knows for sure there are no peanut butter treats. He has since gained much needed weight and is doing very well but is starting to show signs of adrenal disease.  We are hoping that these signs are just season change but a des implant might be in his future.

His cage mate Moo came in adrenal and has the des implant.
I'm happy to report she has a full body and tail full of fur. She prefers soft Chicken treats.

Skittles
Medical treatment- Needs Chordoma on tail removed!

Skittles came to the rescue in September 2012.  This young woman who couldn't even afford to feed the 6 ferrets she already had misrepresented herself as a shelter volunteer/worker and  was trying to get her from a Craigslist ad.  The young woman had texted me some disturbing texts about the whole situation.  I was able to track down the owner of Skittles and introduced myself.  The owner had recently gotten Skittles from another Craigslist ad not aware that Skittles was going to be in need of vet care and a surgery. I asked this woman if she would waive the re-homing fee if I drove the 2 hours to pick her up.  She said yes.  Once I arrived I ended up getting two ferrets.  She didn't want either one of them.  They were skinny, filthy (skittles was orange) and full of fleas.  The exchange lasted less than 1 minute.  The woman jumped in her truck as I was asking routine questions and she quickly left. Once we got home I took a better look at the two girls. They clearly were not bonded and both were very scared.  They were given baths and were flea treated. Badger was adopted a few weeks later by a good friend that could give her more one on one time as she was stressing in shelter land.

Skittles is about 5 years old.  She has made friends with the senior group and gaining much needed weight. She loves extra soft blankets and cuddle cups. Next month  (November) she will be getting surgery to remove a large Chordoma on the tip of her tail. That surgery will cost $300.00 to $400.00 dollars.  Skittles is also showing signs of adrenal disease and will need a des implant.

Hiro- Adrenal
Medical treatment- Monthly Lupron shots till deslorelin implant can be ordered.

Hiro came in this past July with two cage mates Gloria and Sweetie.  They were abandoned in a rental home by their former owners.  When I went to pick them up the house was all closed up and it was so hot.  The ferrets had been there all weekend according to the lanlord. There were only 2 ferrets in a shabby, dirty ferret nation cage.  They had one store bought hammock.  There was no water and the little girl was stuck in the hammock by her very long nails. I quickly assessed them and got them water.  Once we got home I did my normal routine of check new kids in.  The little girl was badly scarred. Which was later confirmed that she had once been on fire.  Her little ears were deformed and she had no fur around her face or paws.  Her eyes also looked to be damaged. She was so weak. The boy (Hiro) was completely bald do to adrenal disease but was in better shape than his sister.  He had a nice big belly on him and just wanted to give love and be loved.  The next day I received another phone call from the landlord.  A third ferret was found!!!  I quickly got in the car and drove the 40 min drive again to pick her up.  She seemed to be healthy  and happy to be found. All three furkids went to the vet.  Sadly I had to put sweet Gloria to rest.  Necropsy showed a few nasty cancerous growths in her abdomen. Hiro was started on Lupron shots and Sweetie was given a few medications do to stressing out.  Sadly about two weeks later Sweetie started having seizures and nothing we did would make them stop so we had to put her to sleep as well.  That left Hiro all by himself.  He went into a major depression and quit eating.  He was put on carafate and had to be hand fed every few hours. His big belly started shrinking.  I decided to put a coupe of other ferrets with him in hopes it would help his depression and it DID!

Hiro is doing very well now and he is happy again.  He has two girlfriends named Sugar and Spice and a buddy named Lewis.  The lupron shots have kicked in and he is covered in fur except for his tail.  He lives with his cage mates in shelter moms bedroom as all four of them need extra care throughout the day.  Hiro is waiting for a des implant.

Sugar and Spice- Both Adrenal
Medical treatment- Monthly Lupron shots till deslorelin implant can be ordered.
Sugar had a cancerous growth on her face removed in September 2012

Sugar and Spice came to the rescue in August 2012. My friend Amy owns a pet supplies store. (no animal sales what so ever! Just supplies) A coupe came in and asked her if she wanted two ferrets. She said no but got their info in case she found someone who did want the ferrets. So in comes our friend Brenda and Amy tells her about it. Brenda e-mails me and asks me if I have room. I say yes and we make plans of her taking the ferrets and me coming to get them as soon as I was able. Brenda lives over 2 hours away.. She made contact with the previous owners and got the ferrets that day. Now I don't know all the details but from my understanding the people were weird an knew nothing about ferrets. These people inherited the ferrets from a passing relative but also have ferrets of their own. These people were shocked that Brenda put her fingers through the bars of the cages. They were shocked to see a ferret playing outside of the cage. Remember I said these people have ferrets of their own! Brenda talked more with the people getting as much info she could without showing how upset she was over the condition of the ferrets they brought her. It was said these 2 girls were not pretty enough for the former owners to keep! :( Brenda and her hubby brought me the girls a few days later. She felt they needed to be with me sooner. When I first saw the girls I quickly found out why. I started crying but quickly composed myself. The former owner said the girls names are Beauty and Beast. Later named Sugar and Spice.

Sugar has adrenal adrenal disease and had you nasty gross growth on her face hence why she was named Beast.  The growth was cancerous but our vet feels she removed it all.  Sugar is currently on Lupron shots.

Her cage mate Spice is clearly adrenal with bald spots and thinning fur as well as a swollen vulva. She had a very bad urinary tract infection upon arrival. She also is currently on Lupron shots.

Both girls are now doing very well and would love to get deslorelin implants as soon as they can be afforded.
